10472 medication monitoring standard published
The IEEE 11073-10472-2010 standard for medication adherence monitoring is published. The HCPC-Europe member Cypak has made a major contribution to this specification and is delighted that it is now an international standard.
The 10472 standard is a very flexible definition that is applicable to many medication monitoring applications, from a simple report card or patient diary to solutions that are fully embedded with pharmaceutical packaging and that automatically record dosage events and subjective experiences. The full range of therapies are anticipated, from those that require a strict adherence to others with a more flexible profile. Even take-as-needed regimens are managed by a 10472 monitor.
10472 encompasses Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROM) that capture an individual's subjective response to therapy, whether patient, family member, or professional carer. Used in PROM mode, a device conforming to the 10472 specification does NOT need to be embedded in pharmaceutical packaging or even directly associated with medication events. The purpose of 10472 is to enable a better link between patient and concerned carers, based on recorded data in standard format.
Many patients are committed to multiple medications from several suppliers. International standards ensure that each medication is monitored in the same way and that all interested parties - patients, family, and professionals - are able to view data in a clear and consistent way.
